It has been a turbulent year in the online poker industry. Since I am a poker player from the United States, its been really hard to find a good poker site to play at. This all started when the US government seized the domains of PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker among a long list of others. Since April, there hasn’t been a lot of interest generated because of the lack of legitimate places to play.
Every once in a while, you will see another poker site that tries to fill the void, but the majority of American poker players have stopped playing poker online. Some of these poker sites that came back in the subsequent months were also shut down or had their domain names confiscated.
Some poker sites, like Bodog, were able to stay open and grow. But they are almost officially out of the US market as they receive full licensing from the UK in 2012. (Update 1/1/12 – USA poker players can now play at Bovada Poker, which spun off from Bodog late in December) Other sites like BetOnline and some of the more obscure sportsbooks also offer small poker rooms and tournaments.
Other poker sites, like Full Tilt Poker, had to close their doors entirely because of the online poker crackdown in the US. A lot of these sites were strictly targeting US players and had no other options because they didn’t have enough international players. Full Tilt Poker was a different case altogether.
Full Tilt Poker made some very bad decisions at the end of 2010. This included giving players credit for money that they deposited when Full Tilt couldn’t actually collect the money deposited. By the time that “Black Friday” happened in April, Full Tilt was in the hole $150 million because they hadn’t actually received the deposits. This caused the current calamity that caused Full Tilt to close. The Full Tilt name and rights have since been sold, though it isn’t clear whether Full Tilt will come back under this name.
2012 Top Poker Sites
This brings me to the part where I tell you about the best poker sites of the upcoming year of 2012. Unfortunately, I am not going to currently list a poker site that accepts US customers. That means this won’t be helpful for a lot of people. If you want to see the top poker sites including those that allow US players, check out the link above.
Right now, the top 2 poker sites for the upcoming year are as follows:
1. PokerStars – Yes, they are still around after the US market left. PokerStars is still the largest online poker site in the world. A large percentage of the foreign players that played at Full Tilt left for PokerStars. The largest tournaments and biggest prizes are found here.
You can get a $600 bonus after making your first deposit at PokerStars. You will receive this bonus $10 at a time by earning 170 FPPs (Frequent Player Points). You earn 5.5 FPPs for each dollar collected in rake or tournament fees.
2. Party Poker – Yes, they are still around after leaving the US back when the US first made this illegal in 2006. Party Poker is number 2 in total number of player behind PokerStars and is every bit the equal. Party Poker offers a 500 bonus in 3 different currencies: UK £, EU € and US $. One dollar is earned for every 10 points that you accumulate.
Of course, online poker news can change very quickly. If I find out any really good deals, I will let you know. Currently, your best bet if you live in the United States is to play at a local bar or casino. Hopefully, the government will realize how much money they are missing out on and create a law that doesn’t create a modern day prohibition. If the US likes 100% of money being made in this industry to flow outside of the country, that is up to them and the archaric laws they create.

There are three phases in a poker tournament beginning, middle, and end game. You have to decide in the beginning you have to decide your strategy. Decisions strategies in all the three phrases are completely different.
In the start, that is in the first phrase of the game you moreover want to play very tough and let the opponents blow themselves out, or you can try to get a quick double up before the blinds get very high. Middle phrase is generally when you are playing decent hands. There is phrase of bubble game when you should get aggressive.
Early Game
You can prefer either to play very tight or extremely loose. Remember that even if you decide to play loose prior to flop you must still play tightly after the flop. Never go on chasing the over cards only for the reason that the blinds are low. The prospect is that when the blinds are low you can call pre-flops and sub par hands to hit a jackpot flop. This strategy may work greatly or may lend you to a bad bankroll as peer its use.
It is not advisable for the beginners to chase the flush, it will not be beneficial rather may cause loss. The more powerful strategy is to play tightly and let the beginners scared of your cards and knock out themselves. In every tournament beginners knock out generally very soon. In this phase, try plying tight. Play on cards like J-J, Q-Q, K-K, A-K, AND A-Q.
Middle Game Starting Hands
In the middle phrase of the game, the section of the starting hands matters a lot for your game. The flop has already come and gone and everyone should have a better feeling for their place in the hand. Once the turn is shown in most hands, you have to make a decision whether to go for the win with a big bet or try to suck out on the river for cheap. Making strong decisions at this point is the difference between being on the edge of busting out and being a chip leader.
When you are getting low, at your part, you should take more risks and if you have a strong bankroll, you could afford to play a tight game and to steal blinds. This part of the game feels very much like the cash games. Make sure that you leave yourself enough chips to be able to go all in and still be able to scare most opponents away. You will need to make a move before you get to less than 4 big blinds left in your stack.
Play with good strong hands; ditch the player who does not have the strong hands. If your bankroll gets below fifteen times start playing loosely, if it get below ten times start playing aggressive. To be clear when the blinds are more than 100 or 200 and you have chips less than 3000 then it is the time to play aggressive.
Late Game
The last phrase of the game is divided into three parts that are bubble game. Bubble game is the phrase when most of the player play tightly and grab in the money in their pocket. In this stage of the game you must loosen your game and steal the blinds as many as you can.
Next are the post bubble game, it is the first few rounds after the bubble bursts. Players with fewer chips will play loosely here, so you mat play tight here. Last is the final table game when everything is settled. At this stage of game most of the decisions are made based on the chips you have. Every tournament is different at this end so one must never give the starting hands here.

Having trouble finding a place to play poker online since Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars got kicked out of the United States? Let me help you find the best internet poker rooms that are still accepting American poker players.
What happened to Full Tilt/PokerStars and can I get into any trouble?
Full Tilt Poker and PokerStars are in hot water since the federal government decided to drop the hammer on these two poker sites on Friday, April 15 2011. The department of justice did not bust these two websites because they offer online poker to Americans. They did so because these sites were manipulating the banking and credit card systems to allow the deposits and transactions that players made to the website. They did this because the banks and credit card companies will reject or deny charges that are labeled as online gambling.
For the time-being, online poker is still considered an “internet gambling” game although the term “Gambling” most often applies to any game that is run by the “House”. Sites like Full Tilt and PokerStars exploited the ambiguous 2006 UIGEA Law that doesn’t specifically state what is considered to be Internet Gambling. The would have been no legal action that the US could have taken if these companies did not lie about the services and products being “sold” to players when they deposited money. They are now being charged with federal money laundering and bank fraud.
Are you in any trouble for playing at these sites? No, at least not on a federal level. There are several state laws that mandate that their citizens do not wager money on online gambling sites, of which poker is included. Here are the states that may enforce laws made against playing poker online:
Washington – The state of Washington has the toughest and most specific laws against online poker. It is a felony to play poker online for real money within the state.
Louisiana – This state also makes gambling online a felony. You will be hard pressed to find a gambling site that will allow you to deposit if you are from one of these two states.
Illinois – Gambling is a misdemeanor in this state; Kentucky – They have taken steps to prosecute gambling sites that allow players from their state to deposit/withdraw money; Missouri – Publicly against any form of online gambling. You may find it hard to play poker online from any of these states.
Other states have laws on the book, but are less likely to pursue any charges against their own citizens. These states include Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, South Dakota and Utah. There are some online gambling sites that may not allow players from these specific states, but not as many.
Top Internet Poker Sites Left for American Players
The place that I have most often played at is Intertops, which is part of the Cake poker network. The reason I first joined at Intertops poker was that they were already the sportsbook that I used when they came out with online poker about a year ago.

You can see that Intertops often has promotions around current events and holidays. Want a chance to win a seat to the 2011 WSOP main event now that Full Tilt and PokerStars are gone? You still can at Intertops! There is also a poker festival going on for Easter. There are extra freeroll tournaments and other prizes to be won.
If you make a deposit into your Intertops poker account, you will automatically qualify for the next $1,000 Depositor Freeroll. In addition to that, you can also claim a bonus on your first deposit worth up to $600 when you use the bonus code 600extra at the cashier. This bonus is paid in $5 increments as you play raked hands and real money tournaments. You can also get a reload bonus if you continue to play after your first bonus is up.

The poker lobby isn’t too difficult to navigate through. You can sort out the Ring Games and Tournaments by game or by limit. There are many different options for you if you would like to participate in a poker tournament. There are Satellites, Freerolls, Gold Card tournaments, Sit & Gos, Private tournaments and special events.

No complaining when you take a tough beat! JK :)
The play at the table is just as easy as any other poker site that you have played at before. Just make sure that you don’t rush things and call/raise when you meant to fold. I’ve made that mistake pressing the wrong button at least 10 times myself.
Take a look at some of the other promotions that Intertops Poker has to offer:

Many poker players call in the game by default, meaning they are not calling in a strategic way. It is a kind of habit of some players. Calling in poker is a very cautious reaction that helps you to save money, which may be lost on other raises.
In any poker game, you want to mix up how you play in order to confuse the other players and keep them off-balance. This will allow you to bluff and get away with it or try to trap the opposing player into betting into your winner. This is especially important when you are playing poker players on any of the top internet poker sites.
Simply calling because you want to see the flop, turn or river is a bad strategy. The most simple explanation I can give is that catching the wrong cards when you shouldn’t have been in the hand will often lead to your demise.
All about Calling in Poker
Calling, is not always a bad habit, it can be good sometimes. It is bad especially when done unconsciously; as in you didn’t pay attention to what the other players at the table have done. If you are doing so then you are wasting money and not taking advantage of the situation.
Here are a couple of quick scenarios to consider:
Let’s say that I got the top pair and top kicker off of the flop. I might want to call or not depending on how many people are still left in the hand. If there are only one or two other players, I want to keep those players in the hand and may just call there bets; but never check and let them hit there hand. If there are more than two other players, you always want to raise and get the speculative hands out of the game.
On the other hand, lets say you have a small pair on the flop and all low cards came out. Did the other player bet before the flop like they had large cards in their hand? Then you don’t call their bet; you raise them and see if they really have anything in their hand.
The thing is that you must be selective and read the situation. When you are playing at a 10 player table, folding is going to be your best option 4 out of 5 times until players start becoming short stacked. Two of the most important things to do at a table is classify the other poker players and play more hands based on the situation and your position at the poker table.
More Poker Advice
Sometimes you have to start playing aggressively. Whether you attempt this near the start of the game or before you get too short stacked, planning your poker strategy is very important.
When you do the same thing every time you get the top pair off the flop, people are going to know how to play you. You’ll either have everyone fold to you or a player with a better hand will milk you for your money.

When you have a strong hand and there is a possibility to win the game, it brings more money in the game pot. It is exactly similarly to farm the soil under an apple tree, and just sit, wait and expecting the apple to fall.
To increase the win you have to play aggressively. To do this just raise your bets, tease your competitors and getting them confused about your cards.
When you start playing aggressively, your opponents are forced to back off. This game involves brains and a good strategy of course. Sometimes it depends upon sheer luck.
The player who calls often but raises hardly ever are the passive players and have only one chance to win or to get a good hand. The aggressive players will not only play the cards but play the opponents also, getting better on the following betting rounds and seize the pot in time.
You must play selectively but at the same time aggressively. Choose your next move actively using all your brains. In most of the cases, a better course of action may be to either to raise or to fold.
However, it is riskier at times but smarter at the same time. Never think that folding the cards is like backing off like a coward. Folding is energetically reviewing your situation and identifying it as one where you cannot play good.
Try knowing that what kinds of cards is your opponent is holding as a matter fact that in the game of poker the chances of winning is minimum if you are having good hands but the chances of loosing are maximum if your opponents are holding strong hands.
However, the advantage of raising is that you pressurize your challenger to work to win. Every time you are raising you are putting a question in front of him that is he against a better hand or not.
Whenever you win to force your opponent to take a decision, you win an advantage, because of your pressure he can choose wrongly and make a careless decision.
This let an aggressive and selective player to succeed even if the opponent folds a technically a better hand, and win good.
